News for the year

Congratulations to LEARN TKD's Ceri Green (Aldershot and Farnborough Class)

Ceri was selected for the Junior ITF England squad and travelled to Spain with the team. She returned home with two Bronze medals from what was her first ever International Tournament

As part of the ITF England Squad she is now looking forward to the World Championships in Argentina in October
On Sunday 7th June 2009, the Learn-TKD Race For Life team arrived at Stokes Park, Guilford to embark upon their challenge to run 5 kms for Cancer Research in full doboks and pink belts (kindly made by Lesley Haymes)

The event followed months of preparation by the group and individuals who had practised running in their doboks during TKD classes to get used to running in the full clobber and in the heat! Ironically nothing could have prepared them for the weather on the day, as after the (rather unusually uncoordinated) aerobic warm-up, the group were drowned by a huge downpour and heavy HAIL!!!
Now equipped with soaking wet doboks which stuck to their bodies, the team set out to the starting line, still carrying their pink helium balloons and high spirits ready for the countdown.

To help the team on the day, they were joined by a fabulous group of cheer-leaders Christine Davis, Maddy Ray (out due to injury), Diana Wilson, Natalie Wilson (former Aldershot Learn-TKD member) and her friend Sophie.
The "supporters club"
The Runners

Not only did they brave the weather to cheer the team on and take photos, but Natalie and Sophie seemed to run even further than the team themselves, repeatedly crossing the park (wearing their Learn-TKD club hoodies and carrying pom-poms) to run alongside the runners and spur them on!

The team which included Julia, Rebbecca, Leah, Jade, Gail, Hills, Emma, Alex and Annabel all successfully completed the run and were buzzing after the race! (Some of the doboks may still be soaking in Vanish after the mud bath!)

To celebrate their achievements most of the group then hit the Shepherd and Flock pub for drinks and snacks whilst donning their race medals. The table was spilling with chips, crisps and peanuts but more importantly with smiles!

A great event, so well done to all!
LEARN TKD ALDERSHOT successfully defended their title of South East Open Champions in March, although not having a full 20 person team, it was a very close call, with the title only being decided on the very last event of the day! Their DENHAM SCHOOL also enjoyed some success with 9 medals from a 15 person team
A small team of LEARN TKD TAEKWON-DO students travelled to Sussex for the Impact Junior Coloured Belt Championships in February.
Of the 16 strong team, 10 returned home with a 15 medal haul. Ceri Green was crowned "Top Banana", with 2 Gold and 1 Bronze

Twenty two members of LEARN TKD attended the Vision/ITF England Championships on 29th November, at the K2 Leisure Centre in Crawley. It was another successful day with the team returning home with yet another impressive haul of 25 medals.

An excellent result particularly worthy of mention, was that of Ross Green, who won the Black Belt Sparring in his first competition as a Black Belt (promoted only 4 weeks previously), and also won a respectable Bronze for the Patterns event.

Seventeen members of LEARN TKD attended the Impact Junior Taekwon-Do Championships in Battersea on 8th November. Three from Denham and fourteen from Aldershot. The team returned home with an impressive 19 medal haul. "Top banana" being Surasi Jarukan (8th Kup) with 2 Gold's and a 1 Bronze medal.

Of the three Denham members, only Rhianna Dowdeswell was successful in placing in the medals. Making up for her team mates misfortune, she returned home with three medals. 2 Silver's and 1 Bronze.

LEARN TKD recently ran its first Taekwon-Do class at the Alton Sports Centre. Two Instructors were present so that the beginners were able to get special attention. The class was well attended with half the class being made up of new members, with the rest, already having some Taekwon-Do experience. Considering it was the 5th November, it was a good turn out for the first session, with several others confirming they would along next week, as unfortunately, they were  busy with Guy Fawkes celebrations and were unable to attend the first session.

Zip Wire Challenge. Members of LEARN TKD Denham and Aldershot completed a "Zip Wire Challenge" recently. The task was to hang off the edge of the roof of Basingstoke Hospital (6 stories high) and slide down to the ground on a wire. 6 members completed the challenge with the youngest being 12 and the oldest being 52. Collectively £1082.10 was raised for "Parity for Disability".
View from the ground Lovely view from the roof Marco looks happy to be back on the ground! Some video footage
LTSI 2008 Invitational Competition.
Members of LEARN TKD’S Denham & Aldershot Schools attended the 2008 LTSI Invitational Championship on Sunday 28th September, and returned home with victorious. The competition kicked off with the under 13’s competing in Patterns and sparring. LTSI’s Hemel Hempstead A Team sat at the top of the leader board for most of the morning, with Denham managing to stay ahead of the Aldershot team. By lunch time, Hemel Hempstead had a very convincing lead, and it didn’t look like anyone would catch them. But after a short break for lunch, and the performance of the team Pattern event, it was the turn of the 13 year olds and over.

Denham medal winners Best School Trophy Aldershot medal winners
Aldershot’s team consisted mainly of 13 year olds and over, and they piled on the pressure, with every single one of them finishing on the winners podium. In some events Aldershot won first, second and third place. At the end of the day Aldershot romped home with 50 points and the "Best School" trophy, with Hemel Hempstead in second place with 29 points. Denham (a much smaller School than their Instructors Aldershot one) managed a very respectable third place with 21 points. All in all a good day for LEARN TKD. Thanks to all the students who took part, the parents for giving up their Sunday to support the event, the officials for working all day, and LTSI for hosting the event.

Denham and Aldershot Taekwon-Do Schools: 25 competitors 44 medals - Well done

Members of LEARN TKD Taekwon-Do attended the UKTA (United Kingdom Taekwon-Do Association) London Open Championships in July. With around 300 competitors in attendance, including the English and Welsh National Squads, they returned home victorious, winning the overall Champions shield. Only the second “non-UKTA” club to do so in the competitions twenty year history. Notable performances came from Denham’s Rhianna Dowdeswell, who won Gold in both her events, Patterns and Sparring, and 12 year old Ceri Green Winning Gold in her Sparring event and Silver in her Pattern event, her first competition since Grading to Black Belt back in March.

LEARN TKD has been supporting this competition for about the last 3 years. It’s an excellent competition with good all round standards from both competitors and officials. The atmosphere is very friendly and competition hosts Dave and Jan Norris do an excellent job. Any one interested in competing next year can visit the competition website at www.londonopen.co.uk.
Members of "LEARN TKD" put on an excellent display of Taekwon-Do over the bank holiday weekend at their Tilehouse School, Denham Green venue. Over a 40 minute period, six Black Belts demonstrated basic beginner syllabus, Coloured and Black Belt "patterns". Full contact kicking combinations on kick shields, Step-Sparring, Semi-Free and Free Sparring. The Free Sparring covered one versus one and two versus one, and also a competition bout.
The demonstration concluded, as is customary, with a display of "destruction". (The breaking of one inch thick pine boards, with bare hand and foot techniques). Denham Class member James Bradshaw (pictured) perform a "flying Side Kick Break" jumping through a hoop!

LEARN TKD students, Craig King, Luke Warner and Catherine Norcliffe, returned home from Poland recently following their first ever International Taekwon-Do competition with the Junior ITF-England Squad. Although unsuccessful in placing in the medals for the individual events, the trio managed Bronze positions in their Team "destruction" events, as well as picking up some valuable experience for future International competition. Their next intended event will be the ITF World Cup on the 15t October this year.

LEARN TKD Instructor Richard Hills attended the 35th International Instructors Course in Dublin on 3-5th May. This event was conducted by the ITF Technical Committee compromising Master Hector Marano (8th degree – Argentina), Master Pablo Trajtenberg (8th degree – Argentina) & Master Willem Jacob Bos (8th degree – Italy) & attracted 157 participants (including 6 masters) from around the world.

Over the 3 days, students received a detailed explanation of movements in colour belt & black belt patterns. The course also covered innovative warm up routines & stretching exercises, blocking & striking applications for one & two stop sparring & a wide range of self defence techniques including the use of leg sweeps
Latest News: Congratulation to Aldershot and Farnborough TKD member Matthew Hills. Matthew (a keen gymnast) took time out from his Taekwon-Do recently to compete in the British "tumbling" Championships, returning home with a well deserved Bronze place medal in the 9 to 10 year old division. He has some video footage of his event on "You Tube". The link is...

Congratulations to the "Student of the Year 2007" Winners
J. Hulbert wins for 2007.
A member of the children's class at Farnham (Berks). Attends class regularly, and extra sessions at Denham too. Is always courteous and polite to everyone in class. Never has to be told off for talking or messing around. Always learns his terminology ahead of schedule and tries his best all of the time!

Well done.

2007 success for R. Dowedswell
A member of the Denham Class. Has maintained and improved on her Grading results since starting the class. Attends class regularly, and has competed and attended Seminars since joining too. Senior Belts take note; her Side Kick is better than most of yours too!

Congraulations.

photo coming soon J Webster 2007 Student of the Year
In an age where people appear to think they are entitled to anything they desire, with little or no effort,  J Webster from the Aldershot/Farnborough class, refused to be beaten and successfully won his 5th kup on his third attempt. Showing an excellent example of the Taekwon-Do Tenet of "Perseverance". It was partly for this reason, he was awarded the 2007 Student of the Year Award.

Well deserved.

Latest News: “First Partnership” a North Hampshire based company who organise educational programmes for young people, recently hired LEARN TKD’s Chief Instructor Paul Adams, IV Dan. The job was to give an introduction to Taekwon-Do as part of the “Class Act Engagement Programme”. A programme designed to help young people at risk of becoming disengaged from education, to think hard about their future and to develop the self-confidence they need to achieve their ambitions.

The Taekwon-Do proved very popular, with a high percentage of the group listing Taekwon-Do as the “best part” of the course, in their end of course reports!

Paul Adams was surprised to hear that everyone on the course was generally lacking in confidence, and under achieving at school as a result.  Especially as it was evident there was a wealth of untapped talent in the group.
Having enjoyed teaching the group so much, he has offered the group a chance to take part in a free four hour Saturday session in the New Year. Hoping to lift their confidence higher and hopefully encouraging some of them to consider taking up Taekwon-Do on a regular basis.

Latest News: LEARN TKD sent 6 students to the ITF-England Championships at the K2 Leisure Centre in Crawley on the weekend of the 24th November. Coloured Belts Jennifer Norcliffe and Kieran Dunne came home with Bronze medals from the Patterns divisions.

Whilst in the Black Belt Divisions, Catherine Norcliffe and Luke Warner obtained Silver in their respective Pattern divisions, with Craig King winning Gold in the sparring. Technically, this puts LEARN TKD's Black Belts up for possible selection for the squad that will represent England at the European Championships next year.

Meanwhile LEARN TKD's Samantha Taylor was in Cardiff on the same day for the UKTA's Open Championships. She came home with an impressive 2 Gold and 1 Silver in her respective Black Belt divisions.

Latest News: LEARN TKD have recently been approached by the Instructor of "Farnham Taekwon-Do", Mr Richard Sharman, 2nd Dan, and have agreed to take over the running of his class, so that he can concentrate on his career.
The class will be handed over to LEARN TKD Instructors Luke Warner and Adrian Cush, with Chief Instructor Mr Paul Adams, 4th Dan, overseeing the class as a whole. LEARN TKD will be in complete control of the class by 1st January 2008. Anyone wishing to join the class may do so as of now.

Latest news: Over the weekend of 22nd Oct' members of "LEARN TKD" attended the 28th IIC in Belgium. Latest news: LEARN TKD Instructors Paul Adams and Luke Warner completed their "Zip Wire Challenge" on Saturday 15th September, at the 3peaks outdoor activity Centre.
Ready to go! Doesn't seem to high! Looks a lot higher from up here! Luke films his journey down 25m.p.h. Pretty fast on a wire!

Although being a "spur of the moment  thing", the pair still managed to raise between £400 and £500 (money still coming in), for local charity "Parity for Disability".

Latest news: On Friday 24th August Mr Needle, 2nd Dan and three friends took part in the Sucata Run. An annual banger rally that takes place over the August Bank Holiday.

Sucata is the Portuguese word for “junk“ and that is exactly what it is about. The challenge is to find a banger worth a maximum of £250 (they bought their ‘classic’ Nissan Micra for a mere £150), decorate it in our team colours and then drive it across Europe.  Click here for Simon's report
Simon would like to thank everyone who supported the charity rally, the combined effort for all people taking part in the event, raised over £38,000 for Gemin-I Charity.

Learn TKD took the competition by storm, moving into first place on the leader board, after the very first event of the day, and never looking back. By the middle of the day, everyone realised no one was going to catch them as they dominated virtually every division they had people entered in. Notable performances included their Black Belts winning both the 1st Dan, and 2nd Dan and above “Pattern” events. Denham students Anu Dissanayake, Clare Coley and Mark Curry all winning Gold in their first ever competitions. Aldershot and Farnborough's Liam Hawley, “cleaned up” taking all three Gold positions in his events, whilst Aldershot and Farnborough's Matthew Hills, competing in his first competition, was very pleased to return home with three trophies, including 1st place for “flying side kick”. Collectively the 23 students returned home with a staggering 33 Trophies, as well as the overall Champions Trophy, a truly fantastic result.
Well down to LEARN TKD’s Samantha Taylor, 1st Dan, who travelled down to Wales for the UKTA’s Open Championships. Samantha who is part of the “ITF-England Squad” returned home with three medals. Silver in the Sparring, Silver in the “Patterns” and Gold in the “Special Destruction” Technique.

News: Learn TKD's Monday night session moved to it's new home at the Farnborough Leisure Centre on 2nd April and the class were thrilled to be joined by the current ITF European Heavyweight Champion Mr Zak Espi, II Dan and his training partner Mr Gary Smith, IV Dan.
At the request of Senior Learn TKD Instructor Mr Adams, IV Dan, the two visitors took the class through an intense warm up and an exhausting 2 hour sparring session. Everyone present would once again like to thank the pair, especially as Mr Smith had travelled up from Brighton for the evening just to visit the class, and had to drive back the same evening.

News: Special thanks to "Master Murray" who paid LEARN TKD's Friday night class a special visit  recently.  Master Murray, a former Taekwon-Do and Judo exponent currently teaches self-defence and  Kick Boxing classes in West London. LEARN TKD Instructor Mr Adams (who used to train with Mr Murray on occasion) had lost touch

with him, until one of Mr Adams's students met him on a Martial Arts film set. As soon as the connection was made Mr Murray was invited down for one of his legendary "fitness warm-ups". The rest of the session was spent working on close range combination work and self-defence. Mr Murray plans to return some time in the future.

News:  In a quest to work with a credible ITF group in the UK that operates in a transparent, honest and professional way, LEARN TKD Taekwon-Do Schools have joined "TKDPower". TKD Power™ is keen to associate itself with professional instructors, such as Mr. Adams, who not only share in their desire to study, the genuine Taekwon-Do of General Choi Hong Hi. The venture will ensure LEARN TKD Taekwon-Do schools have access to some of the countries top ITF Instructors and Masters, and we look forward to an exiting Near Year!

News: Congratulations to Aldershot and Farnborough students Liam Hawley and Craig King. The only two of "learn-tkd.com" students to compete at the "National All Styles" Championships "3rd leg", at the K2 Leisure Centre Crawley, on Saturday 4th November.  Once again both students placed 1st in their respective divisions in the points sparring. Master Sahota at Denham Taekwon-Do (Oct 27th)
Master Sahota, VII Dan, travelled to our Denham School of Taekwon-Do this month, to conduct a Black Belt Grading for our members. Later that evening, Master Sahota conducted a 2 hour Seminar working on the basics of "ITF Patterns". The seminar was thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended the class.

A big thank you to Master Sahota for giving us his time!

GB-ITF Grand Master Choi Seminar Hailed as a tremendous success
Over 300 members congregated at the Parklands Leisure Centre, in Leicester, UK this Saturday (26/09/2005, to participate at the Masterclass hosted by GBITF (INO# 148) and led by the President of the ITF, Grand Master Choi Jung Hwa.

The class, organised by Master Sahota (UK) was also attended by the Senior Vice President of the ITF, Master Volmir Ligay (Russia), and GBITF Masters. Zuza, Harry and Woods.

The session was opened by Mr. Clive Daffey (UK) who organised the line up and took the participants through gentle stretching exercises, before, Mr. Parm Rai (Canada), special assistant to President Choi, took over and led the participants through one of his legendary, and high intensity warm up routines.

Suitably warmed, the class was led in the traditional fashion through fundamental exercises, and basic techniques by Mr. Rai, while President Choi, assisted by Master Sahota, observed, taking over at appropriate intervals to explain and correct individual participants wherever necessary.

Gradually the class moved towards patterns. Again in traditional fashion, President Choi asked for individual participants to volunteer and demonstrate for the whole class, after which he invited comments from the group - importantly asking them to explain the good, as well as any aspect of the performance of individual techniques that needed adjustment and correcting.

After a short (20 minutes only) break for lunch at 2pm, the class, directed by Mr. Rai, moved into a short session on physical fitness; strength and stamina, with Mr. Rai, assisted by Mr. Tajinder Sahota, demonstrating incredibly intense and challenging exercises, which included high speed up/down kicking routines, lunging and stretching, and abdominal workouts.

With the participants suitably exhausted, the class returned once again to pattern work, and the members were able to ask the President for clarification on specific techniques and concepts as each pattern was performed movement by movement.

The class ended well after the scheduled time. Not because the event had intentionally overrun, but because neither the participants, nor the instructors, had actually noticed that the time had actually passed by so quickly, such was the enjoyment and genuine engagement with the session that had transpired.

The ITF has already received tremendous positive feedback from many of the 300 plus participants, in respect of the day's events. On behalf of President Choi, we would like to extend our gratitude to Master Sahota, and GBTIF, for their very kind invitation to Master Choi to present the Masterclass, and for the fantastic efforts of the members of GBITF for their excellent organisation and administration on the day.

The ITF would also like to thank all participants for their continued support. President Choi looks forward very much to the next event at which he can see and meet them all again.
